Campus Security

The COA Public Safety Department is a small, effective, student service oriented department.  The goal of the Public Safety Department is to ensure that those who use the college facilities feel safe in doing so. 

The night watchmen are available to assist students seven nights a week for everything from room lockouts to escorting students from the library to a residence hall across campus. The department organizes a night shuttle that runs from 7:30–11:30 p.m. each evening, transporting students between campus and downtown Bar Harbor. 

Millard Dority serves as Director of Public Safety, Brent Walton and Howdy Houghton are night watchmen. Millard via his office ext. 5690, or cell phone, 207-266-0790. In the evening he can be reached at home 288-4237 or on the COA Emergency Line ext. 5910 on campus, or 288-9001 for those living off-campus.

COA Alert (emergency notifications)

COA Alert (powered by e2Campus) is an emergency notification system that enables college officials to send urgent news and instant alerts (including snow closures) directly to a registered email account(s) and mobile device(s) via SMS text messages. All community members are automatically enrolled in this system.

The basic emergency procedures outlined the COA Emergency Plan are to enhance the protection of lives and property through effective use of college and campus community resources. In the event of an active shooter on campus, please refer to the Active Shooter Protocol based on recommendations from the Department of Homeland Security. 

Snow Closures

It is rare for COA to be buried in snow, but it does happen. The Academic Dean is responsible for canceling classes or closing the school for various amounts of time. A campus email will be sent as early as possible to inform the community of closure or delays. Community members can listen to or watch the following stations: WLBZ (Ch 2- local, Ch 3-Time-Warner Cable), WABI (Ch 5-local, Ch 6-Time-Warner Cable) or FM Radio 94.5(WKSQ), 99.1(WLKE), 104.7(WBFB), 101.7(WFZX), 102.1(WGUY), or AM 910(WABI) on stormy days. Please be aware that town restrictions exist on overnight parking in Bar Harbor from November 1 through April 15.

During snow events a weather alert will be posted via email from the Office of Public Safety. With the occurrence of such an event, a campus-wide overnight parking lot ban will be in effect as follows:

• Overnight parking is allowed only on the west side (Route 3) of the south end of campus, and either the garden lot or the north lot on the north end of campus. Overnight is defined as the hours between 12:01 a.m. and 7 a.m.
• Vehicles parked elsewhere on campus will be towed at the owner’s expense.
• After an announcement that the parking ban has been lifted, all vehicles must be moved to a clean parking lot as soon as possible. Cars not moved within 24 hours will be towed to a clean lot at the owner’s expense.
