We seem to have a clearer understanding of that which is furthest away than that which is closest. We have a better map of the distant universe than we have of our inner selves. There is little agreement in philosophy, science, or religion as to whether the Self exists as the center of experience or whether it is merely an elaborate illusion or fiction created through reflection, social judgments affixing responsibility, or mechanisms of the brain. This course represents an attempt to examine some of the major theories in Buddhism, Hinduism, Western philosophy, contemporary psychology, and cognitive science on the nature and existence of the Self. The class will be conducted in seminar style with discussions of common readings, while each student will be expected to do independent complimentary research which will result in a term paper.

Prerequisites:

Prior philosophy or psychology courses.
