This is a class in the philosophy of science with a special focus on contemporary theories concerning the origin, evolution and fate of the universe.

After an examination of the nature of theories and the structure of laws it will address such issues as why is there something rather than nothing, the origins of the ‘Big Bang’, inflationary theory and multiple universes, the nature of space and time, attempts at developing a ‘Theory of Everything’, and the nature and role of consciousness in the universe.

 

Prerequisites:

Some knowledge of physics will be helpful but not necessary.
